KINDNESS IN LEADERSHIP

October 2024

I have had the good fortune of working alongside leaders in many global companies both large and small, from retailers, to aersopace and investment banks.

In my observation of leadership, I've noted a crucial element frequently absent in leadership styles, which significantly affects company performance—more so than any product or marketing strategy—and that is...

Kindness!

I'm now on a mission to bring more kindness to the workplace, starting with a book on its vital role in leadership and strategic impact on organizational performance. The book will show how kindness is more than a virtue—it's the foundation of a high-performing business strategy.

Why? because in today's world, businesses are fundamentally about people. I recall Michael Dell once saying, “We are a $70 billion company, with 100,000 employees across 178 countries, but there are only two jobs at at Dell, (1) you're either serving the customer or (2) serving someone who is.”

Put simply people buy from people. Trust is critical and trust is rooted in kindness—being kind to ourselves, to each other, and also observing leaders who embody kindness. In essence high     performance requires a human centred approach. We are after all human beings not human doings!

Furthermore, kindness significantly affects our physiology. Every act of kindness triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with movement, memory, motivation, and more. Interestingly, dopamine also relaxes heart blood vessels, promotes sodium and urine excretion, decreases insulin production, slows the movement of gut contents, and diminishes lymphocyte activity in the immune system.

In essence, the advantages of kindness far surpass the well-known benefits of the daily recommended five portions of fruits and vegetables for health and well-being.

Hence the title of the book 😃👉

I plan to publish the book in September 2025. I would greatly   appreciate any form of collaboration, support, and advice throughout this process, so please feel free to message me here.

I intend to update this page on a monthly basis as well. Additionally, for my daily musings, thoughts, and propositions, please consider following me on LinkedIn. You can connect with me by using the icon provided above.

Thank you.

WHY LEADERSHIP KINDNESS MATTERS

Leadership Development is a $35bn industry, predicted to reach $70bn by 2032. Yet, research by the global anlaytics and advisory firm giant Gallup has evidenced that worldwide employee engagement is at an all time low at around 23%. This means then that potentially 66% of employees are disengaged with their company’s direction, its purpose and almost certainly its leadership. The disconnect is real.

Clearly, there has to be a better way. Let's not forget work accounts for at least 1/3rd of our life. How you feel in your job also affects everyone near and dear to you.  A toxic work environment is no job, more so it's damaging to your health.

That Sunday feeling is the true measure of kindness at work. Why can't we ALL look forward to Sunday nights. Let's make kindness the conerstone and benchmark for Leaders and those organisations both large and small for whom we work for.
